Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hints at transfer surprise in Sky interview

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed relief and excitement at having fans back in the stadium for the first game of the season.

In front of a raucous Old Trafford crowd, the Reds will play northern rivals Leeds United in the first game of the season this weekend. “Finally, we have our fans back, which is going to mean a lot to our players and give us energy,” Solskjaer said.

“Leeds is a one-off game, and I believe everyone who plays against Marcelo Bielsa's club understands that they are one-off exceptional games.”

He emphasized the importance of the season's start after a bad run of form at home at the start of the previous campaign left them with a lot of ground to make up.

Meanwhile, Manchester United has been busy in the summer window, adding Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton to the squad, with Raphael Varane due to be announced any day now.

The manager seems pleased with his summer signings, smiling about their potential. “I'm pleased about the squad,” he stated, adding, “I don't think anything is beyond these boys.”

However, Solskjaer would not rule out further reinforcements, stating, "You never know what's going to happen in football... Any surprises, anything can happen, you have to be prepared, but I'm quite pleased with what we've accomplished thus far.”

After nearly losing on penalties to Villarreal in the Europa League final last year, Solskjaer will seek to go one better this year and bring home some silverware.

The Norwegian, who famously scored the treble-clinching goal for Manchester United in 1999, comments on the agony of this year's final.

“Waking up the next morning was a terrible feeling; you never want to feel that way again, and you never want to lose finals or major games. I'm wired that way, and I'm much more driven to succeed.”

The manager has his sights set on the Premier League, which is heartening for fans, but he is not dismissive of the task at hand.

“We are aware that we are playing in the most intense and competitive league in the world, and we must be at the top of our game from game one to game 38 to have a chance of winning the Premier League.”

On Saturday, August 14th, at 12.30 p.m., Solskjaer's players will kick off the 2021/22 season against Leeds at Old Trafford.
