Raphael Varane sends message to Paul Pogba over Manchester United future

Raphael Varane has encouraged Manchester United teammate Paul Pogba to pledge his future to the club while admitting that his connection with captain Harry Maguire will need time to develop.

Pogba, a French midfielder, has less than a year remaining on his current deal and will be allowed to initiate discussions with foreign teams about a free transfer from January onwards, potentially leaving Old Trafford for nothing for the second time.

United is willing to make Pogba their second best-paid player after Cristiano Ronaldo, but he has been hesitant to sign a contract due to interest from Real Madrid and PSG.

Varane, who moved from Madrid to Manchester this summer, thinks his compatriot will ultimately sign a new contract with the Red Devils, and he also revealed how Pogba helped convince him to join United.

‘Of course, it is his decision, but I hope he remains for a long period,' Varane told Norwegian network TV2.

‘He is a terrific player, and I sincerely hope he remains.'

The center-back went on to say of his discussions with Pogba before to signing: 'He didn't have to convince me that I should go here, but I chatted to him about the club to find out what it's like to be here day in and day out.'

‘It was crucial for me to hear his views and feelings on the club, the squad, and their objectives.'

Varane spent a decade at Real Madrid alongside Sergio Ramos, but now has a new defensive partner in club captain Maguire; the new signing is full of admiration for the English center-back but believes their understanding will develop significantly over time.

'He's a great player.' On the pitch, we are still getting to know each other,' Varane explained.

‘We attempt to communicate with one another so that we may better comprehend one another and, as a result, coordinate our motions and positions. This is true not only for myself and Harry but for the entire defense.

‘It is reasonable that we will need some time for things to become automatic, but it will happen since the defense is made up of great players with complementary skills.

‘I believe that with time, we will establish a greater understanding and collaboration, which will allow us to perform and compete at our best.'
