How Raphael Varane has impressed Manchester United in training

Raphael Varane practiced with Manchester United for the first time this week and might make his debut against Southampton.

Raphael Varane, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has had affections for Manchester United since he almost joined the club ten years ago.

United was on the verge of signing Varane from Lens when he was 18 years old, but Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid's sporting director at the time, intervened and convinced the Frenchman to join Madrid.

Varane, 28, was only recently ready to leave Madrid for United and has only recently begun training with his new colleagues. On Sunday, the France international might make his debut against Southampton.

"I think if you've been following football for the last ten years, that's why we want to sign him," Solskjaer stated. "It's no secret that we were friends when he left for Real Madrid ten years ago, Sir Alex was there speaking to them, we were close.

"And ever since, his performances on the pitch, his behavior, and demeanor off the pitch, tell me that he's a Man United player and that we could persuade him to have a feeling for Man United, I think that's been in his heart ever since he went to Real Madrid, he did have a little bit of a feeling for Man United and we definitely had feelings for him for many, many years.

"Everything about him is great, from his Champions League victories to his World Cup triumphs. He's a defender, he's quick, strong, good in the air, and he can play with both feet. In a nutshell, he's everything you're looking for.

"He's humble, he's curious, he asks questions; he doesn't want to learn by making a mistake in the game; he wants to learn it on the practice field before stepping onto the pitch. Everything about him has impressed me."

Solskjaer confirmed that not all United players had been double-vaccinated for Covid-19. Solskjaer has had two vaccinations and has encouraged players to accept them, but has recognized that the club cannot compel them to do so.

Over the last year, United players Paul Pogba, Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri, Dean Henderson, and Jesse Lingard have all tested positive for Covid-19.

"No, they aren't all double-jabbed," Solskjaer said. "I am, and I encourage the lads to be vaccinated, but we cannot compel anyone to do so.

"From what I hear, we still want everyone to get double jabbed, and it's up to them."
