Manchester United stance on Edinson Cavani after Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

Manchester United stance on Edinson Cavani after Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

Man United has signed a deal to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, which may limit Edinson Cavani's playing time.

Despite completing a spectacular deal to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, Manchester United have no plans to transfer Edinson Cavani.

Cavani signed a one-year contract extension at the end of last season, and the 34-year-old was anticipated to lead the line this season, but Ronaldo's arrival will put his spot in peril.

The Uruguayan has yet to play for United this season following a long pre-season break in South America, but having recently returned to Carrington, he might be in the group to face Wolves on Sunday.

Long-term, though, he appears poised to be replaced by Ronaldo, with United agreeing on a cost of €15 million-plus a potential €8 million in add-ons to buy the 36-year-old from Juventus.

Ronaldo will have a medical in Lisbon before signing his deal, completing a spectacular comeback to the club he left for Real Madrid in 2009.

He returns as a striker rather than the scintillating winger he was during his previous stay at Old Trafford, which means Cavani will likely see less game time.

The former PSG striker was on the verge of departing the club after a season, enticed by a return to South America after having to adjust during his first season in Manchester, the majority of which was spent in lockdown.

However, following a blistering conclusion to the season in which he scored 10 goals in his final 11 games, he was persuaded to stay at the club for another season, with the lure of playing in front of a packed Old Trafford playing a crucial role in that decision.

Cavani has been a cult icon since joining on a free transfer last October, and while he may suddenly find himself below Ronaldo in the United striker pecking order, the club has no plans to let him depart before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
