Finally he posts goodbye message to Manchester United

Finally he posts goodbye message to Manchester United

The journey of Joel Pereira as a Manchester United player came to an end this week.

The goalkeeper's contract terminated on June 30 at midnight, making him a free agent.

DON'T MISS:

After sliding down the pecking order among United's back-ups, this was an unavoidable outcome for Pereira.

After nine years at Old Trafford, he sent out a statement on social media thanking everyone involved with his United career.

Jose Mourinho used to be a big fan of Pereira. “We have a third goalkeeper, who I believe will be the best Portuguese goalkeeper of the next generation,” the former United manager told The MEN in 2017.

Unfortunately, Pereira's plan did not pan out. Last season, he was on loan to Huddersfield Town as a back-up, appearing in only two games and surrendering 11 goals.

Following loan spells at Rochdale, Vitoria in Portugal, Kortrijk in Belgium, and Hearts in Scotland, Pereira had a total of five loan periods.

DON'T MISS:

Pereira seems to lose confidence somewhere along the way, and instead of maturing into David de Gea's successor, he has plateaued while Dean Henderson has surpassed him.

Pereira's exit from United, at the age of 25, is long overdue. He's lost a lot of steam, so his next move will be intriguing to watch. He'll benefit from some stability.

He just needs to find a coach who believes in him and who will back him when it gets tough
