Just In: Man United showing an interest in him

Just In: Man United showing an interest in him

Christoph Baumgartner has been added to Manchester United's list of potential transfer targets.

Although a deal for Jadon Sancho appears to be done and dusted, there are still parts of the squad that require improvement. Midfield is one of them.

DON'T MISS:

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on the other hand, appears to be on the lookout for another offensive midfielder. Rather than a more defensive-minded midfielder, which is by far the greater necessity.

The report comes from Kicker, who claims that the Reds are interested in signing Christoph Baumgartner from Hoffenheim. Before his side was knocked out of the tournament by Italy, the Austrian scored the game's winning goal in their last group encounter of EURO 2020.

Baumgartner's attention has shifted back to club football, with Kicker reporting that United are interested in the developing 21-year-old midfielder. However, they will have competition from Liverpool, who are also interested.

According to the report, both United and Liverpool have ‘dealt' with the midfielder, implying that they have spoken with Baumgartner's agency about the possibility of a transfer.

Baumgartner is a superb football player who will only improve in the future. This move, however, does not make sense because United requires someone who can safeguard our defense rather than harm the oppositions.

DON'T MISS:

When you factor in a newly negotiated new deal that has the Austrian committed until 2025, this move becomes prohibitively expensive. I don't see how this move is even close to being a priority when United has other pressing needs in the squad.

Hopefully, this is just a piece of paper, or United is attempting to estimate how much Baumgartner will cost in the future. At this point, adding another attacking midfielder to the mix makes little sense.
