Manchester United open ‘new stage of talks’ for signing – Deal could reach €70m

Today's Portuguese media has been awash with stories about Sporting Lisbon fullback Nuno Mendes and his potential move to Manchester United.

This morning, we already covered A Bola's claims that the player's agent, Miguel Pinho, is flying to Manchester to try to make the Lions' biggest sale ever.

DON'T MISS:

Now it appears that a couple of other publications have something to say about Mendes as well. Record is one of them.

Following claims in the English press about the transfer's first contacts, the newspaper claims to have 'confirmed' the news.

According to reports, the "new stage of talks" was set up "by an intermediary with strong ties to the Red Devils." The official is said to be "preparing the ground for a concrete offer" in order to get things done before the Euros.

DON'T MISS:

According to the report, there was once a possibility that Alex Telles would be involved in the deal, in which the Brazilian would be loaned to Sporting and the Red Devils would pay at least €40 million for Mendes. The former Porto player, however, turned down the offer, and the Old Trafford club will now have to pay close to €70 million to sign the Lions' youngster.

According to the newspaper, Manchester City remains in ‘pole position' for Mendes because they already have a ‘channel' of communication with Sporting due to the transfer of Pedro Porro.

Manchester United, on the other hand, is attempting to take the lead in the signing and has the advantage of a good relationship with agent Miguel Pinho, who also represents Bruno Fernandes.

Another newspaper that has a story on Mendes is Correio da Manh. They claim Manchester United is interested in signing the fullback as a result of Bruno Fernandes' 'approval.'

According to the report, the transfer could cost up to €70 million. That would be between €40m and €45m in cash, plus a player loan and performance bonuses.

It's been suggested that Manchester United's agent, Miguel Pinho, could help the club move faster, despite competition from the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid.

So three Portuguese newspapers have sources confirming Nuno Mendes' potential transfer to Old Trafford. We just wonder if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side would really spend €70 million on another left-back, regardless of how good he could be, after Luke Shaw had such a good season, with Alex Telles also proving to be a good backup option.
