Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives sceptical update on Harry Maguire injury in swift U-turn

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has quickly dismissed his own claim that Harry Maguire will play in the Europa League final.

The Manchester United captain limped off the field late in a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa earlier this month after suffering ankle ligament damage.

Scans revealed that Maguire had not suffered a fracture, and Solskjaer appeared to interpret this as a sign that Maguire would be able to play against Villarreal on Wednesday, May 26.

"The good news is that he hasn't broken anything; it's just ligament damage," he explained, "and we hope to see him again before the Europa League final."

The Red Devils suffered back-to-back home losses to Leicester City and Liverpool without their first-choice centre-back.

The defeats demonstrated how reliant United are on Maguire's presence in defence, emphasizing how crucial it is that the 28-year-old is available for the final.

However, in his most recent update on the England international, Solskjaer reversed his positive outlook and admitted to having reservations about Maguire's recovery.

It's still too soon. "We are not yet in the testing phase," said the Norwegian. "We'll give him as much time as he needs to heal."

"We're not going to see him back in the league, so hopefully we'll see him in the final, but I'm not sure."

Maguire was expected to return for United's final two Premier League games against Fulham and Wolves, but Solskjaer's latest update rules him out of any domestic action.

While Maguire is racing against the clock to prove his fitness ahead of the final, Solskjaer was able to offer a more optimistic assessment of forwards Anthony Martial and Daniel James.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to get both of them on the field and give them some minutes," Solskjaer said of the duo. "Let's see how many minutes they get against Wolves, and then hopefully they'll be ready for the final."

  1. It Good ideal on our captain to play in the final stages but let include Rashford not to play because it very week has a player our manager need to rest him
