Alejandro Garnacho had a memorable weekend for Manchester United's under-18 team.
The Spaniard scored a hat-trick in United'6-1 victory over Stoke, putting them clean at the top of the table.
DON'T MISS:
Although the game was significant for Garnacho's season, it was also significant for teammate Charlie McNeill.
McNeill assisted all three of Garnacho’s goals, laying each of them on a plate for the quick-thinking Spaniard to nip in and score from close range.
They were poachers’ strikes, with Garnacho taking advantage of McNeill’s selflessness and creativity.
McNeill himself missed a close-range sitter in the second half, when it became easier to score.
He made up for it less than two minutes later with a stronger finish.
McNeill has 16 league goals and one Youth Cup goal.
Yet he didn't get a single assist until a fortnight ago.
DON'T MISS:
This changed with a brilliant reverse pass against Everton in a 2-0 victory last time out, which set up Omari Forson for the opener.
McNeill, 17, demonstrated that he is much more than a goalscorer with a hat-trick of assists against Stoke.
The aim of academy football is to progress as a player rather than to score as many goals as possible.
McNeill must work hard to improve his game and connect with his teammates.
He demonstrated a bond with Garnacho, who now has six goals for the season as a result of his contribution.
For a total of 23 goals, this may be a partnership to keep an eye on in the future.
This was his 17th goal of the season, surpassing teammate Joe Hugill's record of 16 academy goals for the season – despite the fact that all of his has been for the under-23s.
