Solskjaer tipped to axe Man Utd favourite in no-brainer decision

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been advised that there isn't "any reason" why he shouldn't replace a long-term favorite with up-and-coming talent.

With the additions of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, Manchester United now have a starting eleven that can compete with any team in the league. The vast majority of positions now have a designated starter, but one area remains undecided: between the sticks.

For much of his time at Manchester United, David De Gea was regarded as the world's best goalkeeper. However, in recent seasons, the Spaniard's lofty expectations have begun to dwindle.

Indeed, Dean Henderson was given numerous opportunities to impress last season after a standout loan spell with Sheffield United the year before.

This season, Solskjaer has had the decision about who should be his starting quarterback taken away from him. Henderson is currently suffering from Covid-19 infection. Thankfully, Solskjaer stated on Friday that the stopper is making fantastic progress.

When everyone is healthy and ready to go, the decision on who gets the call will be made. However, ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes there can only be one outcome.

In an interview with Football Insider, Robinson stated that De Gea should be replaced and Henderson should take up the captaincy. “I believe he [Henderson] will play when he returns,” Robinson remarked.

“He did well when he came in at the end of last season, but he was extremely unlucky with his injury at the Euros.

“Now he has difficulty with Covid, therefore he was unable to play in the first game of the season. When Ole gave him the gloves last season, he didn't put a foot wrong.

“I don't see why he shouldn't be United's number one this season if he's fit and available.”

Man United's plans for Pogba have been confirmed by Solskjaer.

Meanwhile, after revealing the club's plans for the PSG-linked Frenchman this summer, Solskjaer highlighted what he expects from Paul Pogba.

As he enters the final year of his contract, talk over Pogba's long-term future has begun.

PSG has been widely expected to make a move this summer or next. Man United are said to want to keep Pogba and offer him a new contract with better conditions.

In response to inquiries about Pogba, Solskjaer told reporters that he is convinced Pogba will stay at Old Trafford for the rest of the season. “Yes, I expect Paul to be here on September 1st,” the Norwegian stated (via Goal).

“Whether you have a five-year deal or a one-year contract when you sign for Manchester United, you must rise to the challenge of consistently producing at a high level.

“I'm not concerned that the duration of any player's contract will affect their level of drive and inspiration. Every time you play, you want to do well for your team, your teammates, yourself, and your family.”

Solskjaer went on to say what he wants from Pogba in what may be his final season at Manchester United.
