Sir Alex Ferguson's prediction about Man Utd's 'best young player in the world' coming true

Sir Alex Ferguson's prediction about Man Utd's 'best young player in the world' coming true

Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford were both unavailable for Manchester United's inaugural Premier League match against Leeds United.

Manchester United was at their best on the opening day of the Premier League season, hammering Leeds for five goals.

Mason Greenwood was given the opportunity to establish himself as Manchester United's long-term alternative at center-forward when Edinson Cavani was given an extended summer vacation by the club.

And he's taken advantage of the situation, scoring twice in the first two games of the Premier League season for Manchester City.

The 19-year-old has maintained the excellent form that he showed at the conclusion of last season when he scored six goals in the final nine games of the campaign.

Following injury setbacks that resulted in his being forced to miss out on England's historic Euro 2020 campaign, Greenwood has spent the summer refining his game and ensuring that he is fitter, meaner, and more equipped for the hustle and bustle of Premier League play.

“The youngster has had challenges, he's had injury concerns, and he's done a fantastic job to get through them,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remarked last week of his young player.

I can see the results of his efforts throughout the summer since he has worked really hard to be in shape,” says the coach.

“Of course, Mason would have loved nothing more than to have been selected to represent his nation in Euros, but that is simply because he enjoys playing football, he enjoys representing his country, and he enjoys representing Manchester United,” says Ferguson.

The teenage striker has a growing number of fans both within and outside of Old Trafford, but when it comes to the Red Devils, it is Sir Alex Ferguson's opinion that matters the most, and the Manchester United manager is a great admirer of the youngster.

A question was posed to Gary Neville in an interview given earlier this year, in which the famous manager was asked, "which young player in the globe do you rank highest?"

Following a lengthy pause, Ferguson stated, "I believe Mason Greenwood has the potential to be a great player."

“He's got the calm and the coldness of a great striker in him,” says the coach. He never panics, his shoots are always low, and he always manages to stay within the goalposts despite the pressure. He's demonstrated a lot of potentials.

“He's a year younger than the youngster Phil Foden, who is the only guy to have come through at Manchester City and seized David Silva's position in the team.

“He's been just fantastic. Both of those players are the most promising young talents on the English football scene.”

Greenwood has now scored 19 Premier League goals before turning 20 years old, a total only surpassed by Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, and Rob Fowler in the league's history.

His ambition will, of course, be to imitate Wayne Rooney's goalscoring exploits at Old Trafford, with Ian Wright predicting that he would smash the club's all-time scoring record before his career is up.

During an appearance on The Kelly & Wrighty Show, he said, "When you look at what Mason is doing there, the figures are incredible."

In terms of performances and stats, he's doing really well. If it is a harbinger of things to come from him, it is terrifying to think about what he will end up accomplishing since he has already accomplished a great deal.

"He's arrived in Manchester United under a lot of pressure, which is something that comes with the position, and he appears to be coping with it well right now."

"He simply appears to be ready right now. "I have a feeling that he'll be blowing past those other guys' stats in no time."
