Sancho starts, Martial scores... but no Varane in Manchester United behind-closed-doors friendly

Manchester United defeated Burnley in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Old Trafford on Tuesday, with Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard scoring.

Burnley took the lead through Aaron Lennon, but Martial equalized before goals from Lingard and Fred clinched a victory for the Red Devils as they continue to improve their match fitness.

Lingard's return will be especially welcome for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who missed the start of the 2021/22 season after testing positive for Covid-19 - and a goal for the England international will keep Bruno Fernandes on his toes following the Portuguese's hat-trick against Leeds.

Given that Marcus Rashford is out with a shoulder injury, and that Sancho and Edinson Cavani are still working on match fitness, Martial's goal will be cause for confidence.

There was also a double defensive boost, as Phil Jones came on as a substitute after missing the previous year due to injury, and Eric Bailly returned for the first time since the Olympics, albeit Raphael Varane is still not ready for the game action.

The big appearance for Solskjaer, however, would certainly have been £73 million summers signing Sancho starting as he prepares for the next season.
