The story of Manchester United's friendly vs Burnley

The story of Manchester United's friendly vs Burnley

Today, Manchester United hosted Burnley in a friendly at Old Trafford.

United was unable to play a pre-season friendly against another Lancashire club, Preston, due to positive Covid tests last month.

Furthermore, many players haven't had a lot of pre-season practice under their belts.

So, while it's an unusual approach, it's easy to see why United organized this game.

The final score at Old Trafford was 3-1 in favor of Manchester United. Aaron Lennon, who is now training with the Clarets, opened the scoring for Burnley.

United's opening two goals came from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard before Fred scored again.

After making his United debut off the bench against Leeds on Saturday, Jadon Sancho began the game, although Raphael Varane did not play.

The starting eleven for Manchester United was as follows: Heaton, Dalot, Bailly, Maguire, Williams; Matic, Van de Beek; Sancho, Mata, Lingard; Martial.

Burnley's starting lineup was as follows: Hennessey (Norris 46); Bardsley, Collins, Thomas, Pieters; Lennon, Helm, Gomez-Mancini (Tucker 77), Glennon (Dodgson 60); Barnes, Vydra (Harker 55).

At halftime, goal scorers Fred and Victor Lindelof were inserted, while all other substitutes except reserve goalkeeper Matej Kovar came on with 30 minutes remaining.

Phil Jones wore a redshirt for the first time since January 2020.

Last week, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stated of Jones on the club's website, "I'm impressed by his resilience in training." We must regulate the workload from the start.

“I was a part of that myself after being out for the better part of a year and a little more.

“He's been tenacious and tireless in his efforts. Now is not the time to rush; now is the time to do everything right. As previously stated, reserve games, Under-23s, and possibly behind closed doors.

“He's already played in-house games versus the 23s, so things are looking up.”

It appears like United's effort to get Jones fitter is succeeding, and today's game is another step ahead, which ideally his body will respond well to.

Perhaps he'll be well enough to leave on loan before the end of the season, because he needs to be out playing regular football, which he won't get at United, especially now that Raphael Varane is here.
