Following the announcement that Harry Kane would join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and football director Murtaugh will meet next month to discuss the club's transfer ambitions.

Before Manchester United's transfer meeting next month, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and John Murtough have reached a "shared agreement" on a striker.

The manager and football director of the Red Devils will meet in September to discuss recruitment, with a solution to the number nine position expected to be a top conversation.

United was able to extend Edinson Cavani's contract for another season, but the Uruguayan is slated to leave in 2022, while Anthony Martial's stock continues to fall owing to his lackluster performances.

As a result, many have argued that Harry Kane, who declared on Wednesday that he will not be joining rivals Manchester City this summer, should be the player they want.

However, it appears that the club is more interested in another possibility, someone who is expected to be courted by Europe's elite in the coming year.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Solskjaer and Murtough both feel that Erling Haaland is the best long-term choice to lead the line at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were unable to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker in January 2020, before to his joining the German club and hitting 62 goals in 63 games to date.

Despite Haaland's agent, Mino Raiola, causing Solskjaer and co several problems with Paul Pogba's contract situation in recent years, United is expected to be on the hunt for the 21-year-old sensation next summer when his €75 million (£68 million) release clause becomes live.

A move would bring the Norwegian manager and his compatriot striker - who was born in Leeds but grew up in Norway - back together after they worked together at Molde until Haaland left for RB Salzburg in 2019.

Regardless of their relationship, the goalscorer supreme's connection to Manchester City (his father spent three years in sky blue) and the fact that the Citizens are still looking for a new striker means the Citizens could throw their hat into the already crowded ring in the hope of securing his signature in a year's time.

Mason Greenwood's two goals in two games this season have put him in contention, but the club will still bring in a fresh face upfront within the next year.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville feels the club should do everything possible to sign Kane, believing he would provide an immediate boost to their Premier League title chances.

He told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports: "They'll have to invest on a center forward at some time. Why not buy him now and give Ole the incentive he needs to reach that 90-point [target]? They won't be able to achieve it with just [Jadon] Sancho and [Raphael] Varane.

"Manchester United will lose [Anthony] Martial and Cavani in the next 12 months, and they'll only have Mason Greenwood as a center-forward, with [Marcus] Rashford [best] on the left," the ex-right-back explained.

"Manchester United will need a center forward in the next 12 months, and he is available now for £150 million.

"You've got Martial, [Daniel James], [Juan] Mata, and [Jesse] Lingard, all of whom I believe we could do without at the club.

"I personally believe Kane's addition would be a differentiation."

That was said before the Tottenham Hotspur striker issued a statement on Twitter, saying: "It was great to watch the Spurs supporters' reaction on Sunday and to read some of the words of support I've received in recent weeks.

"I'll be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be completely focused on helping the squad succeed."
