According to rumors, Sheffield United are interested in loaning Manchester United midfielder James Garner for the 2021/22 season.
The 20-year-old spent last season on loan in the Championship, starting with Watford before being released due to a managerial change.
After that, he transferred to Nottingham Forest, where he rapidly established himself as a regular first-team player and a fan favorite, appearing in 20 games and scoring four goals.
Forest wants him back, according to The Sun, but the Blades have entered the race and are looking for a loan agreement.
‘Garner, 20, would be a key component of Slavisa Jokanovic's ambitions and could provide backup for the Bramall Lane club if late bids for players such as Sander Berge are made.'
DON'T MISS:
It's unclear whether United would be interested in bringing Garner back to the Premier League.
Some feel that, after proving himself at that level last season, he now has to be tested at a higher level, either at a Premiership team or in one of Europe's other top leagues.
Garner played numerous central midfield roles as he advanced through the academy, even filling in at center-back on occasion.
DON'T MISS:
Since joining Forest, though, he has established himself as a specialist holding midfielder, a position that United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is rumored to be looking to bolster.
However, due to United's limited pre-season, the Birkenhead-born midfielder has had few opportunity to establish his claim, and it appears unlikely, though not impossible, that he will be a part of Solskjaer's plans for the new season.
If another season in the Championship is on the cards, a return to Forest could be a more reliable road to regular action than the unpredictability of newly relegated Sheffield United.
‘There will be other clubs interested, but United would undoubtedly love Garner to play over 40 games on loan, and he would do that at Forest,' according to Nottingham forest.news.
‘Fans would love to see the youngster in action at the City Ground,' says one supporter.
