‘I don’t know how they do it’ – Klopp shocked at Man Utd spend

Jurgen Klopp is perplexed as to how Manchester United spent so much money this summer, although he is less "surprised" by Chelsea, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Red Devils have signed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million, while Raphael Varane is set to join from Real Madrid for £42 million.

Liverpool, on the other hand, paid only £36 million for Ibrahima Konate, and Klopp recently stated that the club has no plans to add any more players.

He understands Man City and Chelsea's financial heft as a result of their wealthy owners, but he is perplexed by Man United's transfer activity.

Klopp told reporters, "February 2020, the pandemic began; nobody knew how long it would last; of course, I was hoping it would be finished in a month." We now know a lot more about it, but it's still a terrible period. It was also for football clubs, although for different reasons.

“I'm not surprised (that other teams have spent heavily), because these clubs, I believe, do not rely on this type of stuff. We've all heard about the crises at Chelsea, City, and PSG. I'm not sure what's going on at United, and I'm not sure how they do it.

“We have our own way, and it has been that way since I joined. We can spend, and we are permitted to spend the money we make - this is what we have always done.

“We spent before we generated money with Ibrahim Konate this year because it became evident after last year that we couldn't take any chances in this situation at all. That is our predicament.”

Klopp added, when asked about other teams' spending during the pandemic, "I'm never shocked about the financial power of City, Chelsea, or United."

I've lived in this nation long enough to know that they always find a way to do these things. It's just our way. We keep the team together, which is very vital. I understand that it isn't as thrilling as bringing in new talent.

“People believe that if you don't sign, you don't work — this is not true. We are continually considering the immediate and long term - what can we do?

What will the team's appearance be this year and next? I know it's not as thrilling, but if you're a true Liverpool fan, you're excited with the news the club gave in the last few weeks — Allison's new deal, as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, and Virgil Van Dijk's new contract. Others will follow, which is fantastic.

“It's not as exciting, but it's excellent news — if other teams wanted to recruit these guys, they'd have to pay a lot of money, and we already have them. We have a strong group and are in a stronger position than last year. Let us attempt to build on that and see where it takes us.”
