Why Man United's philosophy change is good news for Leeds United ahead of Old Trafford showdown

The opening game of the 2021-22 Premier League season has given Leeds United fans an away trip to fierce rivals Manchester United on August 14.

A fixture that needs no introduction with both sets of supporters wanting to get one over each other at the earliest opportunity.

DON'T MISS:

The Whites will want to forget their last trip to Manchester with Marcelo Bielsa’s side falling to a 6-2 thumping from the 20-time top-flight winners.

However, things could be different this time round. According to The Telegraph, the hosts are set to implement new tactics in the new campaign, changing from a 4-2-3-1 formation to a 4-3-3.

The switch will be made due to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s hope that his team will become more attacking, while a defensive midfielder will aim to help the back four and the other five players when attacking too.

DON'T MISS:

A change to this formation will likely mean the ever-present partnership of Scott McTominay and Fred will come to an end.

The duo caused Leeds huge problems at Old Trafford last season, with the former netting two goals in the first three minutes as well as putting in a solid defensive display and helping his teammates secure the win.

However, this switch could work in the favour of the Whites with a gap behind the striker allowing space in the middle for their 3-4-3 or 3-3-3-1 formation to catch their opponents on the counter.

Bielsa is an attack-minded manager who will be looking to exploit any space he can. With Bruno Fernandes expected to drop back from the number 10 role and partner Paul Pogba in central-midfield, the gap the Portuguese international leaves will allow the likes of Rodrigo or Tyler Roberts to transition in that space and create more attacking phases for the Whites.

Leeds’ recent summer arrival Junior Firpo will slot into the left-wing-back position, helping his teammates both defensively and offensively. The 24-year-old recently arrived from Barcelona and won the Copa del Rey with the club last season.
