With the Premier League PINC -0.3 percent season approaching, Manchester United still has a lot of work to do before football takes precedence week in and week out.

Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho have given the fans a new lease on life heading into the season, especially given the speed with which the former trade was completed, but they are still short on reinforcements in key places.

Manchester United are expected to make an offer for Kieran Trippier before the transfer window closes, but Atletico Madrid are holding out for roughly £30 million - a sum the Red Devils are unwilling to pay. They are convinced that if they leave it to the last embers of the window, they will be able to get a discount.

A defensive midfielder is also required, in addition to a right back. With Fred and Scott McTominay primarily operating as a midfield double pivot, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unlikely to stick with that formation and instead go for a typical 4-3-3.

If this happens, Manchester United will be in desperate need of a true defensive midfielder who can sit in front of the defense and break up play when necessary.

DON'T MISS:

While Nemanja Matic appears to be the ideal candidate for the job on paper, with the Serbian international being in his twilight years, it is unrealistic to expect him to play at the requisite level every few days. There will undoubtedly be certain games designed specifically for Matic's participation, but it would be foolish to expect the midfielder to do so in all 38 Premier League games.

As a result, the hunt for a defensive midfielder goes on. Wolverhampton Wanderers' Ruben Neves and West Ham United's Declan Rice have both been contacted. Manchester United are unlikely to make another significant dent in the summer transfer market by luring the England international away from his boyhood club.

Eduardo Camavinga is also on the Old Trafford shortlist, with a fee of approximately £30 million expected. At the moment, though, the Frenchman prefers a move to Spain, with Real Madrid circling the area and pushing for his signature.

DON'T MISS:

It is critical that anybody Manchester United signs this summer has the qualities to immediately integrate into the club and make an impact. A defensive midfielder with the confidence to take the load off his shoulders and guard the defense was just as important this summer as a right-winger.

Manchester United will pursue all alternatives ahead of the Premier League's start on August 14, whether it's Neves, Rice, Camavinga, or another player from Europe.
