HE WISHES LIVERPOOL HAD SIGNED RAPHAEL VARANE OVER IBRAHIMA KONATE

HE WISHES LIVERPOOL HAD SIGNED RAPHAEL VARANE OVER IBRAHIMA KONATE

Glen Johnson weighs in on the Raphael Varane and Ibrahima Konate transfers, wishing that Liverpool had instead signed the Manchester United-bound star.

In this window, Liverpool and Manchester United have made progress with their player recruitment. The Merseysiders made an early splash when they signed Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, addressing their main defensive issue.

Liverpool paid around £36 million for the former Leipzig center-back. Jurgen Klopp will be pleased with the addition and consider it money well spent. The Reds failed to defend their Premier League title last season due to major defensive issues, with Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez both missing significant time due to season-ending injuries.

The addition of Konate, on the other hand, strengthens the squad for the coming season. Liverpool isn't the only team looking to add a top-tier center-back. Manchester United made a splash with the signing of Jadon Sancho, but now everyone is talking about Raphael Varane, who joins from Real Madrid.

Last season, United's defense was constantly criticized, so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needed to bring in someone reliable. He went with Varane, a player with whom the club has a long history. Despite being linked with a move to Manchester United, the French defender stayed at Real Madrid for ten trophy-laden seasons.

The French World Champion, on the other hand, wanted to try something new this time, and United piqued their interest. The clubs have reached an agreement, and all that is needed now is an official announcement. The Premier League giants will pay £34 million upfront, which is £2 million less than Konate's fee.

Fans and analysts alike have hailed it as a masterstroke of a signing that they believe would restore Old Trafford's greatness. Varane would have been a better fit for Liverpool, according to one former Premier League player. Glen Johnson spoke to BettingOdds.com, and Empire of the Kop released his words, in which the former Liverpool and Chelsea right-back shared his thoughts on the two centre-back signings.

According to Johnson, Konate may not be as excellent as Varane. “Yes,” he replied. To be honest, I haven't watched Konaté play very much and don't know very much about him. But I'd be astonished if Konaté is as excellent as or better than Varane.”

Varane is distinguished from Konate by the fact that he has extensive experience at the highest level. That's not to suggest the former RB Leipzig player isn't talented. He is six years younger than France's World Cup winner and has the rest of his career ahead of him.

Varane, on the other hand, has won everything in club football. After winning the World Cup in 2018, he has only failed to qualify for the Euros. However, in terms of the upcoming season, he may have the upper hand in fast elevating the team, and Johnson seems logical in that regard.

DON'T MISS:

Both signings, however, are great in their own right. Liverpool do not need to be concerned about Konate because Van Dijk and Gomez are close to returning. Varane will bring a winning mindset to United, and he and Harry Maguire may establish a fantastic, possibly title-winning pairing at Old Trafford.
