According to rumors, Manchester United is getting closer to signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane and expects to complete the deal by the beginning of August.
The Red Devils are preparing to make a formal approach to the LaLiga giants for their French centre-back, according to Sportsmail, after being persuaded that the player wants to transfer to Old Trafford.
DON'T MISS:
Varane's Real deal expires in less than a year, and the Spanish club risks losing the 28-year-old centre-back for free next summer if he is not re-signed this year.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United are expected to complete the transfer in the next 12 days, meaning Varane will be named a Manchester United player a fortnight before the Premier League season begins.
The 28-year-old has shown an interest in joining United, according to Sportsmail, though no deal has yet been reached, with a fee of £50 million for a player with one year left on his contract still considered too excessive by United.
Varane has spent a decade at Real, earning three LaLiga crowns, four Champions League trophies, and four FIFA Club World Cups during his stint with the Spanish giants. He has made 359 appearances for Real since his debut.
After Zinedine Zidane's departure at the end of last season, the LaLiga heavyweights are currently managed by Carlo Ancelotti, a former Everton manager.
Varane is returning to Real training late due to his efforts for France at Euro 2020 this summer, which saw Les Bleus exit in the last-16 after a penalty shootout loss to Switzerland.
DON'T MISS:
If he moves to Old Trafford, he will battle for a starting berth alongside Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, who finished 12 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City this season.
With the £73 million transfer of Borussia Dortmund and England winger Jadon Sancho due to be revealed this week, buying Varane would be a clear indication of determination that they are prepared to close the gap on their city rivals.
Meanwhile, United is still interested in Kieran Trippier, although talks have stalled due to Atletico Madrid's valuation.
Inter and AC Milan have expressed interest in Alex Telles, but their offers have been for loans, and no progress has been made on Diogo Dalot's transfer.
Newcastle United is one of the clubs interested in loaning Axel Tuanzebe, who wants to play more often now that Varane is due to join.
