Cristiano Ronaldo hoped to lead his team to their first major championship.

He only lasted 25 minutes before collapsing after a tough challenge from Dimitri Payet.

DON'T MISS:

The renowned forward was stretchered off the ground in tears, but he was still determined to leave his imprint.

While barking directions at his colleagues, Ronaldo coached Portugal from the sidelines.

In a memorable day at the Stade de France, Portugal would go on to win the title.

The game proceeded to extra time, but Eder's 109th-minute winner gave Fernando Santos' team the victory.

After the final whistle, Ronaldo was obviously pleased.

He went on to share a sweet moment with Sir Alex Ferguson, who was present at the game.

Ronaldo and his Portugal teammates climbed into the stands to receive their awards and lift the trophy.

Ferguson was waiting for Ronaldo as they made their way back down to the pitch to congratulate him.

DON'T MISS:

Ferguson congratulated Nani, whom he managed at Manchester United, and shook hands with others, including Pepe.

But when he spotted Ronaldo and the two of them exchanged a heartfelt embrace, his face brightened up entirely.

In 2003, Ferguson paid £12 million for Ronaldo to join Man United.

Because of Ferguson's influence, the Portuguese would go on to become one of the best players in history.

Despite Ronaldo deciding to leave for Real Madrid in 2009, the two maintained a good relationship and the respect they have for each other has never dwindled.
