Williams hails his improvement and says it has inspired him

Brandon Williams was kept out of the Manchester United team for much of last season by Luke Shaw.

The addition of Alex Telles didn't help matters either, as Williams was frequently used as cover for Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right back.

However, Williams told the club's official website that Shaw, who was recently called up by England for Euro 2020, is an inspiration to him.

Shaw wasn't in the international picture at the start of the season, but his best season in a United shirt has earned him a well-deserved recall, and Williams was full of praise for his left-back rival.

“Anyone can be inspired by Luke,” Williams said.

“Just because no one thinks you're performing at your best doesn't mean you're not improving as a player, and you can have those moments.

“It's just a matter of seizing opportunities, as Luke has. He's nailed down the position, he's been on the field, and he's performed, so you've got to keep him on the field.

“He gains momentum, and he uses that momentum to improve himself as a player.

Last month, it was reported that a number of Premier League clubs are interested in loaning Williams, 20, out next season.

West Ham, Southampton, and newly promoted Norwich are all rumoured to be interested.

During the January transfer window, Everton and Newcastle were also interested.

Given his lack of playing time last season, Williams appears to be in desperate need of a loan deal to continue his development.

In another interview, he stated that he is happy to be training with the best at United, but that he needs to play regularly at some point. If he has a good season at left-back in the Premier League, he could be an England option soon. Apart from Shaw and Ben Chilwell, Gareth Southgate's options in that position are limited.

It's been a difficult season for Williams, but Shaw is a great player to look up to when things aren't going your way.
