How previous injured England stars have fared as Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire risks taken

On Tuesday, England manager Gareth Southgate named his 26-man squad for the European Championships, which included Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire despite fitness concerns.

Henderson has not played a competitive minute since February due to a groin injury, but he was fit enough to make the bench for Liverpool's final Premier League game of the season, and he is expected to play in England's friendly against Austria.

Meanwhile, Maguire suffered an ankle ligament injury against Aston Villa for Manchester United last month and has not played since, with Southgate admitting the defender is a doubt for England's first group game against Croatia.

Marcus Rashford has also been dealing with a recurring foot injury for the last few weeks of the season, admitting that his fitness is being managed "game by game."

With that in mind, Mirror Football has looked back at how other England stars have performed at major tournaments when their fitness was questioned.

David Beckham

After a reckless challenge on Beckham in Manchester United's Champions League match against Deportivo La Coruna left the winger with a broken metatarsal, his participation in the 2002 World Cup was called into question.

Beckham missed the rest of United's season due to the injury, but he was deemed fit enough to be named to England's squad by Sven-Goran Eriksson.

After a seven-week absence, Beckham started against Sweden but was withdrawn after about an hour.

He then played the entire 90 minutes against Argentina, scoring the game-winning penalty kick in the 44th minute.

Beckham ended up starting the rest of England's games at the tournament after they were knocked out in the quarterfinals by eventual champions Brazil.

DON'T MISS:

Michael Owen

After missing the majority of Newcastle's Premier League season with a metatarsal injury, Owen played for England's B team in a friendly against Belarus to prove his fitness ahead of the 2006 World Cup.

Owen was named to Eriksson's squad for the tournament and started England's first two group games, despite Rooney's lack of fitness.

However, during England's final group game against Sweden, Owen ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, sidelining him for nearly a year.

"When you look back, perhaps foolishly, I went to the World Cup because I had not played enough for Newcastle at the end to suggest I was fit," Owen told the Chronicle in 2013.

Terry John

Terry was unable to play in England's opening Euro 2004 match against France after injuring his hamstring in a friendly against Japan.

He was fit to play against Switzerland the following game, and he took the place of Ledley King in the starting lineup.

Terry started every game for England after they were knocked out on penalties by Portugal in the quarter-finals.

Wilshere Jack

Despite starting only one game for Arsenal this season, Roy Hodgson named Jack Wilshere to England's Euro 2016 squad.

When asked about Wilshere's inclusion, Hodgson stated: "He's there because he's a special player. We don't have an abundance of Jack Wilsheres."

However, the midfielder only appeared in one game during the tournament, the final group game against Slovakia, as England was eliminated in the round of 16 by Iceland.

Gareth Barry

Barry was a doubt for the 2010 World Cup after suffering an ankle injury in Manchester City's final game of the season.

Fabio Capello, England's manager, spoke about Barry's importance ahead of the tournament, saying: "He is critical to the team's balance. A holding player is always required in front of the back four. This is a critical position."

As a result, Capello took the risk of including Barry in his squad, and despite missing the first game against the United States, he was able to play in England's remaining games.
