Torres talks progressing as Williams nears Old Trafford exit

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will want to add to his playing options in the summer in order to win his first trophy as Manchester United manager next season.

United hasn't won a trophy since Jose Mourinho led the Red Devils to Europa League glory in 2017, a feat Solskjaer attempted to achieve last season when his United team fell at the final hurdle, losing a thrilling penalty shootout to Villarreal in La Liga.

The fact that United went undefeated on the road for the rest of the 2020/21 league season will give the Old Trafford fans reason to be optimistic.

Despite finishing second, United fell 12-points short of bitter local rivals Manchester City, who won the Premier League for the third time in four seasons.

Solskjaer, like everyone else at United, will be desperate to put an end to City's current supremacy and win the Premier League for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge eight years ago.

The club is already linked with a big-money transfer for long-term goal Jadon Sancho, the 21-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder who is reportedly due to receive a €78 million bid from the Red Devils.

While Dortmund considers the terms of United's latest bid, here is the Manchester United transfer round-up for Tuesday morning.

Man United's management is believed to be growing more optimistic that a deal for Villarreal's Pau Torres can be completed before the start of next season.

United are getting closer to signing Torres, according to the Manchester Evening News, as they continue their search for a new central defense.

The Red Devils are looking for a long-term partner for club captain Harry Maguire after the performances of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof left a lot to be desired.

Any agreement for Torres, though, will have to wait until later this summer due to Spain's participation in Euro 2020, which keeps Torres busy right now.

The 24-year- old has already been seen by United, with his brilliant performance in the Europa League final cementing the club's desire to bring him to Old Trafford.

Torres is the ideal option to play with Maguire since he is naturally left-footed and highly gifted when it comes to playing out from the back.

Since the turn of the year, rumors have circulated that Steve Bruce is interested in loaning out young United defender Brandon Williams, and it now appears that the trade is almost complete.

TalkSPORT first reported the Magpies' desire to bring Williams to St James Park in January, but a loan deal for the second half of the 2020/21 season fell through as Solskjaer stopped the deal.

This summer could be the one in which Bruce finally gets his man, although on a temporary basis, as the BBC reports that United are more inclined to let him go this time.

Williams' position was being watched by a number of clubs last season, with the full-back only earning two starts in the second part of the campaign.

Given Bruce's positive connection with United, United may be willing to send Williams to the Toon for a season to polish his skills.

Lingard had a fantastic loan spell at West Ham in the second half of last season, prompting many fans to push for him to be chosen in Gareth Southgate's final Euro 2020 team.

Lingard almost missed out, reaching the provisional team before being removed at the last minute, but his career has clearly resurrected following a long period on the outside at parent club Manchester United.

Now, the midfielder has said that the promise of consistent playing time is the most important aspect in selecting where he will play next season.

The Hammers fans will be hoping to see the 28-year-old back on a permanent basis after he scored 10 goals in claret and blue last season, helping the club secure Europa League football next season.

Lingard told Sky Sports, "Regular football is the most essential thing for me." "You started to see the real me after coming on loan and getting a strong run in the squad, with the goals and assists.

"I've never had any doubts about my abilities, and I've always trusted in myself. 'I need game time,' I told the manager [Solskjaer] during pre-season. 'We can talk about it in December,' he replied, and we spoke again, and he agreed to let me go on loan.

"During my time at West Ham, I had several chats with him. He was quite helpful, and it was a fantastic loan for me."
