Tahith Chong wanted for Curacao international switch

Tahith Chong wanted for Curacao international switch

Tahith Chong, a Manchester United teenager, must make a decision about his international future.

Chong has six times represented the Netherlands at the under-21 level. He's represented the under-19s, under-17s, under-16s, and even the under-15s.

DON'T MISS:

Chong, however, is faced with a decision after failing to make the senior Netherlands squad thus far.

According to a report in the Telegraaf, Curacao's preliminary team for the 2018 Concacaf Gold Cup has been announced, and Chong, 21, has been named to it.

Chong is a Curacao citizen who was born in the Netherlands Antilles.

Chong has not publicly accepted the request at this time. Curacao is seeking for a number of Dutch youth internationals to represent their country.

Former Netherlands manager Guus Hiddink is Curacao's current manager.

DON'T MISS:

The island nation is rated 79th in the world, and one of their players is former Newcastle defender Vurnon Anita.

Curacao has already been knocked out of the 2022 World Cup qualifying rounds after losing 2-1 to Panama over two legs.

Next Thursday, the nation will publicly reveal its Gold Cup squad, allowing Chong a few days to consider his options.

Chong will be tempted to play international football, but he may not be ready to give up his goal of playing for the Netherlands just yet.

Curacao will play El Salvador on July 10 and Mexico on July 15 in the Gold Cup, which begins in July.

Manchester United's players will be settling down for pre-season around this time. Some may return as early as July 1, while those competing in the Euros and Copa America will join the group later in July.

Chong is one of the players that is in desperate need of a quick return. After a pair of unsuccessful loan periods at Werder Bremen and then Club Brugge, his chances of breaking through at United are already bleak. He was unable to maintain a consistent starting position on either side.

Even if Chong's future does not lay with United, a solid pre-season might help him, and if he is sold, it may be in his best interests for him to find a new club as soon as possible.

Chong must weigh his own international ambitions against the possibility of appearing in the Gold Cup, which might help put him in the shop window.
