Although Paul Pogba scored a spectacular goal on Tuesday night, neither Roy Keane nor Patrick Vieira was happy with his overall performance as France was defeated on penalties by Switzerland at Euro 2020.
The enthralling encounter ended 3-3 as France conceded early but roared back to take a 3-1 lead, with Pogba curling a magnificent third goal from long range into the top corner.
DON'T MISS:
They were unable to hold on, as the Swiss scored twice late in the game, including an equalizer in the 92nd minute when Pogba failed to trackback from midfield.
The Manchester United midfielder's goal was unforgettable, and he produced a succession of brilliant forward passes in the second half of regular time, but Keane's performance will never be complete unless he also performs his defensive duties, which he did not do.
No doubt [playing alongside Pogba] would be frustrating, but it's all part of Paul's character that fans want to see, and it's terrific,' Keane told ITV.
But then I'd focus on the goal they gave up in injury time when he was clumsy in midfield; that's where I'd be most harsh.
‘It sounds cruel because he's done some fantastic things moving forward today; there's no doubting Paul's ability; it's just the other side, perhaps his maturity.'
DON'T MISS:
‘United has faced these issues in the past. Is he capable of playing in a two-man midfield? He probably won't be able to because he lacks the necessary discipline.
‘Even now, he frustrates you because, despite his outstanding offensive ability, he lacks defensive discipline.'
‘The best players do it every week, but Paul doesn't quite get it.'
Vieira, a former Arsenal and France midfielder, agreed with his old adversary and believes Pogba needs a leader beside him on the pitch to nag him into doing what he is now failing to accomplish.
After Keane's remarks, Vieira responded, "I fully agree." ‘You expect more from him when you look at his potential and what he can accomplish in midfield.'
‘If he played next to Roy, he might be a different player because he needs someone on his back putting pressure on him and expecting things from him.'
‘It's disheartening because he's capable of far more than what he's now offering the team.'
