Things may be looking up for Manchester United in their reported pursuit of Jadon Sancho, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may be looking elsewhere, according to a report.
Manchester United has been tracking Sancho once again, according to reports in the sport. Sancho's high price had previously prevented the Red Devils from completing a deal, but Borussia Dortmund has reportedly reduced the England winger's value.
The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell reported, citing unnamed sources, that Manchester United are now confident of meeting Borussia Dortmund's lowered demands for the 21-year-old, even if the Bundesliga side includes a "additional" amount in achievable add-ons.
“Negotiations over a price for the 21-year-old have begun in earnest, and United have been given encouragement that Borussia Dortmund will accept a lower amount than last summer's asking price,” Whitwell wrote.
After discussions stalled last year due to Sancho's €120 million ($146 million) price tag, Dortmund and Manchester United are now open to finding a "solution" that works for both parties, according to Whitwell.
According to the journalist, Manchester United is willing to make an offer of £80 million ($113 million), which he claims was “initially communicated in Germany as being amenable to Dortmund.” According to Whitwell, Dortmund allegedly wants an additional £20 million ($28 million) in attainable add-ons.
“There is still work to be done on the fee, with the two clubs at this stage disagreeing on valuation,” Whitwell added.
Despite the apparent progress of the Sancho transfer, Red Devils manager Solskjaer is reportedly not thrilled with the prospect of signing the Borussia Dortmund ace this summer. Instead, according to a report obtained by Football365 from Sport, the Norwegian manager is prioritizing a move for world-class defenders Raphael Varane of Real Madrid and Kieran Trippier of Atletico Madrid.
Solskjaer is said to have realized that Manchester United's weakness is on defence rather than offence. It is becoming clear that Solskjaer's plan is to beat Manchester City and have the best defensive squad in England by bringing in Varane and Trippier, according to the report.
Varane and Trippier have both proven to be two of the best defenders in the game today. They are, however, both in the final year of their contracts, and if the two Madrid clubs decide to part ways with the pair, this summer could be their last chance to secure a transfer fee.
