Cristiano Ronaldo might be re-signed by Manchester United in the summer transfer season.
Manchester United is reportedly willing to give Cristiano Ronaldo £17 million per year to return to the club. With talk of a return to Old Trafford gaining traction, it's time to go back in time to 2013. David Gill flew to Spain to speak with the veteran, who was at the time at Real Madrid, assuming he'd reached an arrangement.
During his six years at Manchester United, Ronaldo developed into a superstar.
He was signed from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2003 and struggled at first to acclimate to life at the top level.
After the 2006 World Cup, though, Ronaldo returned a different beast, leading the team to three Premier League victories in a row and the Champions League trophy in 2008.
He was released to Real Madrid the following year.
And talk of a comeback has been prevalent in almost every year since, with new rumors circulating that an emotional homecoming could be in the works this summer.
According to reports in Italy, United is preparing a £17 million per year contract offer for the Portugal international, despite the fact that Jadon Sancho is their top priority at the moment.
With that out of the way, it's time to rewind the block.
The Daily Mail reported in 2013, on the same day Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement, that Ronaldo was "close" to returning to the club from Real Madrid.
David Gill, the club's powerbroker at the time, was said to have flown over to Spain to meet with Jorge Mendes, the player's agent.
And Gill was left with the sense that United would bring their prodigal son back to the Theatre of Dreams for a second tenure just four years after he had left.
That covert flight, on the other hand, was in vain.
Ronaldo eventually decided not to return, opting instead to stay at Real Madrid, where he would go on to win four Champions League titles, including three in a row under Zinedine Zidane.
Under David Moyes, United had a difficult transfer window that summer, missing out on many of their key targets.
Cesc Fabregas had been lined up, but the Spain international, who is currently strutting his stuff for Barcelona, decided to stay at the Nou Camp.
Thiago Alcantara, who is now at Liverpool, has opted to quit the club in order to join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
And Gareth Bale joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur, despite United having offered him a higher fee than their La Liga rivals.
To add gasoline to the flames, Ronaldo recently appeared to wish Juventus farewell, thanking everyone at the club for assisting him in achieving his goals over the last three years.
"Any elite player's life and career are full of ups and downs," he remarked.
Year after year, we face amazing teams with extraordinary players and lofty aims, therefore we must always give our all to maintain our high standards.
"We were unable to win Serie A this season; congratulations to Inter on their well-deserved victory." However, I must respect everything we accomplished at Juventus this season, both collectively and individually.
"The Italian Super Cup, Italian Cup, and Serie A Top Scorer trophy provide me joy, particularly because of the hardship they entail in a country where nothing is simple to win."
"With these achievements, I achieved a goal that I had set for myself since the day I arrived in Italy: to win the Championship, Cup, and Super Cup, as well as to be Best Player and Top Scorer in this fantastic football country filled with incredible players, massive clubs, and a distinct football culture."
"I've already stated that I don't seek records; records chase me; for those who don't understand what I mean, it's really simple: football is a team sport, but we assist our teams achieve their objectives by conquering individual obstacles.
It is only by constantly seeking more and more on the field and working more and more off the field that recordings and collective titles arise, some as a natural result of the other.
"As a result, I'm very proud of this fact, which has been widely replicated in recent days: Champion in England, Spain, and Italy; Cup winner in England, Spain, and Italy; Super Cup winner in England, Spain, and Italy; best player in England, Spain, and Italy; over 100 goals for a club in England, Spain, and Italy."
"Nothing compares to knowing that I've had an impact in the countries where I've played, and that I've brought joy to the supporters of the clubs I've represented."
"This is what I work for, this is what moves me and this is what I’ll always keep chasing for until the last day.
