According to sources in Spain, Kieran Trippier is more interested in increasing his wage at Atletico Madrid than coming to Manchester United.
Man United have identified Trippier as a top target for the summer transfer season. They want to give Aaron Wan-Bissaka greater competition at right-back.
They may try to entice Trippier back to England because he is considered as a more dangerous attacking threat.
He left English club football in 2019, after Tottenham Hotspur sold him to Atletico Madrid. He was a member of Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 team.
Trippier, who helped Atletico Madrid win La Liga in 2020-21, appears to be at ease in the Spanish city. However, there are reports that he is now hoping to return to the Premier League with Manchester United.
However, Spanish publication Marca has refuted those suggestions, claiming that the United rumors are merely a "tactic" for Trippier to gain more money in Madrid.
Trippier's deal with Atletico Madrid expires in two years, so he could be looking for a bigger extension. However, this does not rule out the possibility of relocating to Manchester in the near future.
Atletico may not be able to grant him the wage boost he desires due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic. In that situation, United will be waiting in the wings.
They allegedly had a €12 million initial bid turned down. Atletico will only let him go if his €40 million release clause is activated, so they'd have to raise it dramatically.
As a result, United will have to virtually treble their bid, despite predictions that £30 million (just under €35 million) may be sufficient.
In the meanwhile, Trippier will concentrate on England's Euro 2020 campaign. On Sunday, he started the first group game against Croatia on the left side of the defense.
That isn't the type of zone United would utilize him in, but it does reveal another side of his personality.
However, after experiencing league success with Atletico, he may now desire to stay in Spain.
Rio Ferdinand, a former United defender, does not believe United should sign Trippier.
“I don't think they'd buy someone to come in and play [every week], I think whoever comes in there is going to be a backup,” he told the Metro.
“They spent £50 million on Wan-Bissaka, not as a back-up or number two.
“If I'm being honest, he [Trippier] wouldn't be my first option, but I recognize the talents he possesses.
“However, Trippier would not be my first pick in terms of the type of player I'd bring in to play as a No.2 right-back.”
