Man Utd, Chelsea make contact after seeing Arsenal ruled out of defender hunt

According to reports, Manchester United and Chelsea have made contact with Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba.

Since joining Leverkusen in January 2020, Tapsoba has outlined his potential. In the 2020-21 Bundesliga, he appeared in 29 games and scored once.

The defender has impressed in his transition from Portuguese to German football and may be tested in another league in the near future.

The Premier League appears to be Tapsoba's next destination, though Leverkusen has stated that they intend to keep him for next season. Despite this, links to Arsenal have persisted for some time.

They appear to have come to an end, however, after SportBILD provided an update on his future.

Arsenal will be unable to sign Tapsoba this summer, according to the German newspaper, due to their poor Premier League finish. They were eliminated from European competition after finishing eighth.

Tapsoba, on the other hand, may still end up in the Premier League, as Manchester United and Chelsea have joined the race to sign him.

DON'T MISS:

Tapsoba was linked to United back in March when it was claimed they had been told to scout him. They appear to have heeded that advice, as they are now vying for his signature.

Chelsea, on the other hand, is looking for a defensive reinforcement to eventually replace Thiago Silva. As Thomas Tuchel returns to his homeland, they have been linked with a number of Bundesliga players, with Tapsoba being the most recent.

With two Premier League giants now interested in signing Tapsoba, Leverkusen may struggle to keep him. However, BILD adds that they may hold off on making formal bids until the end of next season.

The Burkina Faso international, who is still only 22, has plenty of time left on his contract, which runs until 2026. United and Chelsea will wait to see how he develops during that time before making a decision – or they may act sooner if they feel compelled to do so.

Last summer, Leverkusen lost one of their key players when Kai Havertz moved to Chelsea.

If Tapsoba takes a similar, or even identical, path, it could cost nearly as much as the Champions League winner.

Simon Rolfes, Leverkusen's director of sport, warned in March: "I am not surprised that Eddy's quality arouses interest." However, the player is not for sale.”

He went on to say that it would take a "immoral" offer, similar to what they received for Havertz, for them to consider selling.

When Havertz moved to Chelsea, he cost the club around £75 million.
