Jesse Lingard has been denied a spot in the Euro 2020 squad for a second time.
After being left out of Gareth Southgate's first 26 when the group was reduced from 33, a spot became available after Trent Alexander-Arnold was injured.
The first point of contention was whether Lingard or James Ward-Prowse should be chosen. In the end, it was Brighton defender Ben White who received the nod.
Lingard responded gracefully on social media, wishing England the best and stating that he would be rooting for the team from home.
Lingard appeared in two friendlies this week, including a 15-minute appearance against Romania at the weekend.
In the end, it appears that Harry Maguire's injury was a factor in England's decision to select another centre-back.
Maguire is unlikely to be fit for England's first match against Croatia, underscoring how slim his chances of making the Europa League final for United were.
Because of the necessity for defensive depth, Southgate viewed Lingard as a luxury, and he was left out.
Lingard, who played for England at the 2018 World Cup, was a victim of the rejection.
After leaving United in January, he went on loan to West Ham, where he scored nine goals and added four assists despite not making a single Premier League game in the first half of the season.
