DAVID DE GEA APPEARS TO AIM DIG AT MAN UTD AS SERGIO ROMERO FINALLY LEAVES

DAVID DE GEA APPEARS TO AIM DIG AT MAN UTD AS SERGIO ROMERO FINALLY LEAVES

Romero finally left United this week. Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea appeared to criticize the club's treatment of Sergio Romero, who finally left Old Trafford earlier this week.

Romero has spent the majority of his six years in Manchester as De Gea's understudy, and he appeared set to leave a year ago when Dean Henderson returned from his loan spell at Sheffield United.

DON'T MISS:

Despite reports of interest from elsewhere in the Premier League and beyond, a deal did not materialize, and Romero remained a United player after the end of the club's extended transfer window last summer.

He spent the majority of the season in his homeland, failing to make a single appearance for United after returning to England.

The refusal of United to sanction a move elsewhere not only prompted a scathing Instagram post from Romero's wife, but it also reportedly enraged some of the goalkeeper's teammates.

DON'T MISS:

De Gea's tweet wishing Romero luck in his next challenge suggests he was among those who felt Romero deserved better from the club.

"Good luck, Chiqui!" reads De Gea's tweet. "I wish you the best of luck, my friend. You deserve to be well-treated in your new endeavour. Have fun."

Many United fans interpreted De Gea's tweet as a thinly veiled dig at those who stymied Romero's opportunity to move on last year.

As a result, some may be wondering where this leaves the Spaniard, who has also been linked with a move away from Manchester United in recent months.

De Gea is one of United's highest-paid players, but he is no longer guaranteed a starting spot under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has favoured Henderson in a number of games in the season's second half.

Solskjaer, on the other hand, chose De Gea for the Europa League final against Villarreal. He ended up missing United's eleventh penalty in the shootout, handing the Spanish side the victory.
