Cristiano Romero: Fabrizio Romano downplays Manchester United bid

Cristiano Romero: Fabrizio Romano downplays Manchester United bid

Replace the mouthpiece. Manchester United's alleged interest in Atalanta's Cristian Romero has been downplayed by Fabrizio Romano.

United is rumored to be looking for defensive reinforcements this summer, with Raphael Varane of Real Madrid being the main target.

DON'T MISS:

Jules Kounde, a young Frenchman from Sevilla, has also been linked with a move to Manchester United.

Romero's name has suddenly surfaced as a prospective replacement, with some rumours claiming that Atalanta had already rejected a £39 million bid.

The Italian club is reportedly demanding a sum of around £50 million for a player who was voted Serie A's 'Defender of the Year' last season as a result of his outstanding performances.

Romano, on the other hand, today dismissed reports that United had made a formal proposal, tweeting:

“Cristian Romero's team and Atalanta have denied ever receiving a €45 million bid from #mufc. There's nothing serious or sophisticated here.”

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to be casting a wide net in search of a solid partner for Harry Maguire.

DON'T MISS:

For the Norwegian, the position has been a continual source of frustration, as neither Victor Lindelof nor Eric Bailly has done nearly enough to earn a long-term spot as Maguire's plus one.

Solskjaer will discover an Argentina international with growing acclaim both in and outside of Serie A in Romero.

With a reputation for aerial domination, quickness, and uncompromising tackling skills, the 23-year-old is considered one of the most powerful defenders in the Italian League.

In sum, Romero appears to be the whole deal, with the added benefit of plenty of opportunity for improvement.

Although the new contradictory messages do little to clarify the issue, it is heartening that United appears to have moved on from their vexing practice of pursuing a single target until the very last minute of the transfer window before succumbing to defeat.

Hopefully, the interest is legitimate, and one of Romero, Varane, or Kounde will join the club to help with the defense.

The search of a center-back may not be as exciting as the pursuit of a flashy attacker, but it is probably just as vital to the team's long-term future.
