Can a Cristiano Ronaldo Return to Manchester United Help Them End Their Trophy Drought?

Can a Cristiano Ronaldo Return to Manchester United Help Them End Their Trophy Drought?

Christiano Ronaldo is arguably the greatest player in football history, and he first came to prominence at Manchester United. Indeed, it was at Old Trafford that he progressed from an inexperienced forward to the world's best footballer after six years with Sir Alex Ferguson, United's legendary manager.

During his six-year stint with the Red Devils from 2003 to 2009, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo made a significant contribution to the club.

When Manchester United signed him for more than $15 million in 2003, he became the most expensive teenager in English football history, and his performance on the field never fell short of his price tag.

During his time at Manchester United, Ronaldo led the club to three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup, a Community Shield, two League Cups, and a Champions League title.

When he was still playing for Manchester United, CR7 won his first FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2009.

He eventually moved to Real Madrid the same year, where he spent the majority of his career before joining Juventus three years ago.

His move to Juventus did not produce the desired results, as the Italian club signed him to deliver the coveted Champions League title, which the Serie A giants have not won since 1996.

The surprising part is that Ronaldo has not failed as a player, having scored over 100 goals for the Turin-based club in the last three years. However, the club's results in the Champions League have been extremely disappointing.

In the previous three years, Juventus was eliminated in the round of 16 by Ajax, Lyon, and Porto, respectively. With Juventus struggling in the Champions League, Ronaldo is dissatisfied with his life in Turin, and there is much speculation about his immediate future at the club.

Several reports have surfaced claiming that he intends to return to Manchester United.

DON'T MISS:

Since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure in 2013, the Red Devils have struggled to re-establish themselves as a team, failing to win the Premier League or the Champions League in the last eight years.

Despite making significant progress under Norwegian manager and former Manchester United player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United does not appear to be a team capable of winning silverware in the near future unless an inspirational figure like Ronaldo joins the squad.

The Red Devils had a great chance to win a trophy in the Europa League final against Villarreal, but they lost 11-10 in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The failure to deliver in crucial situations has been a major issue for United since Sir Alex's departure, and it was also the case against Villarreal.

Someone like Ronaldo, who has almost everything there is to win on a football field, can undoubtedly help them in this regard. As a result, Ronaldo's possible return to Old Trafford could be a watershed moment in the club's history.

Former India international Syed Rahim Nabi told Sputnik that Ronaldo's presence would inspire other Manchester United players to push themselves to the limit.

"Ronaldo's return to Manchester United will be like a son returning to his mother, and when a player like CR7 returns, other players get charged up," he said.

"United is almost certain to do exceptionally well with Ronaldo in the team, both in the EPL and in European competitions, because he is a player who delivers for his team. United's trophy drought will undoubtedly end because, along with Edinson Cavani, Ronaldo will form one of the most lethal front-line combinations in the world, capable of dismantling even the best defenses in the world "Nabi went on to say.

The truth is that Solskjaer's team hasn't been able to provide Cavani with enough support on the front line. Whatever little support the Uruguayan has received in recent years has come from Marcus Rashford and, to a lesser extent, Mason Greenwood.

Rashford and Greenwood, on the other hand, are not in the same league as Ronaldo. CR7 is truly in a class of his own. The mere sight of Ronaldo and Cavani together will be enough to shake the confidence of other Premier League clubs.

Furthermore, Ronaldo can play in any position - as a right-winger, centre-forward, or left-winger - giving Solskjaer enough flexibility to balance his team regardless of the opposition's strengths. If that isn't enough, Ronaldo can set a good example for the team and serve as a mentor to the club's young, inexperienced players.

Abdul Khalique, a former international footballer who played for Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan Sporting, believes Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford will benefit both the club and CR7.

"Ronaldo's return to United may very well extend his career, as he is capable of taking the club to new heights even at the age of 36. His experience and desire to win are unrivalled in football history, and his arrival at Old Trafford bodes well for the team's future "..

Despite all of the positives surrounding his potential return to the Red Devils, Solskjaer will face a difficult decision, given that Ronaldo has already turned 36 and having him in the squad could jeopardize his long-term plans for the club. However, Ronaldo remains one of the best players in the world, and the allure of having him back at United is simply too strong to pass up.
