According to an Italian report, Cristiano Ronaldo could make a sensational return to Manchester United this summer as part of a swap deal that would see Paul Pogba rejoin Juventus.
Despite winning two trophies and clinching Champions League football, Ronaldo's future in Turin is uncertain, and Juventus are said to be open to including him in a trade.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, both players could reunite with their former clubs, though Ronaldo would have to lower his hefty salary demands, and United may also demand money from Juventus.
Massimiliano Allegri has taken over as manager at the Allianz Stadium after Andrea Pirlo was fired, and the new man is said to be open to the possibility of letting Ronaldo leave.
As a result, United and Paris Saint-Germain appear to be the only two clubs capable of negotiating a deal for him, with the latter reportedly eyeing Ronaldo as the ideal replacement for Kylian Mbappe.
Despite Juventus' apparent interest in re-signing Pogba, it is unclear whether United will even consider any potential offers for the mercurial midfielder.
Ronaldo earns just under £500,000 per week in Italy and, according to the report, he would have to accept a significantly lower salary package at Old Trafford for any switch to take place.
PSG may step in as a result of the uncertainty surrounding the situation involving United and Ronaldo.
According to the same source, Ronaldo is the best candidate to fill the void left by Mbappe. The young ace's contract in Paris expires in 2022, and no agreement on an extension has been reached.
Mbappe has stated that the future project at the Parc des Princes will be crucial in his decision to stay, and he has also stated his desire to win the Champions League.
The 22-year-old was named Ligue 1's top scorer last weekend after finishing with 27 goals, but PSG were unable to retain their title after being pipped by Lille by one point.
Mbappe, who joined PSG from Monaco in 2017 for an eye-watering £163 million, has starred and piqued the interest of Real Madrid, as well as a number of Premier League clubs.
If he fails to achieve success on the European stage, he may decide to leave, and Ronaldo, who is said to be equally unsettled, appears to be the ideal replacement.
Ronaldo's contract at Juventus expires next year, and with the clock ticking down on his time at the club, speculation is mounting that he is dissatisfied and would be willing to leave.
The same outlet has also linked PSG forward Icardi with a swap deal for Ronaldo, though no official talks have taken place. Meanwhile, the former has recently stated that his future is 'at PSG.'
Ronaldo, perhaps inadvertently, fueled speculation about his Juventus future by posting a lengthy, cryptic statement on social media at the end of the season.
His fleet of luxury supercars was spotted being transported away from his mansion late at night, and Ronaldo is set for showdown talks with the club, which could lead to him looking for a new adventure.
Pogba's future is also uncertain following United's Europa League defeat to Villarreal. He was taken off prior to the penalty shootout and watched as David de Gea's spot-kick was saved.
Prior to the match in Gdansk, his older brother Mathias made a sensational call for him to leave United and join Barcelona.
'Once he (Paul) wins the Europa League, we will talk (about his future),' Mathias said on the Spanish television show El Chiringuito.
'I don't know anything, but I'm with you; I'd sign tomorrow if that was the question,' he continued. Hopefully, he will sign with Barcelona.'
