Manchester United will become only the THIRD English top-flight club in history to go a whole season Unbeaten

On the final day of the Premier League season, Manchester United has the opportunity to become the only top-flight team in English football to go a whole season without losing away from home.

United's come-from-behind victory over Aston Villa last Sunday was their 18th Premier League away game this season, and they have yet to lose - they head to Molineux on May 23 to meet Wolves.

DON'T MISS:

Behind their impressive road record, United have lost six times at Old Trafford, including this week's losses by Leicester and Liverpool, and have fallen just shy of rivals Manchester City in the title chase.

However, if United does not fall to Wolves, they would enter a select group of just two other clubs who have had undefeated seasons on the track.

The first is Preston North End's undefeated season of 1888-89, where they were the first English team to go a whole top-flight season unbeaten.

Despite the fact that only 22 games were played during the season, the popular Preston team won eight and drew three of their 11 away games.

Incredibly, it took another 113 years for an English top-flight team to go an entire season without losing on the field.

DON'T MISS:

The second squad to accomplish the feat was Arsenal in 2001-02, who secured the Premier League and FA Cup in the same season.

In reality, their away record was better than the Invincibles' two years later.

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal secured 14 of their 19 Premier League road games in 2001-02, losing the other five.

However, Arsenal drew eight games in 2003-04, capturing 11 of their away games in that historic season.

The only contrast between these three teams and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad this season is that those teams secured the championship in their respective seasons, while the Red Devils have not.

This is due to a disappointing home performance, which began with a defeat to Crystal Palace on the first day of the season.

They were also embarrassed 6-1 at home by Tottenham, and have also lost at Old Trafford to Arsenal and bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United.

Most recently, they were clearly second best in a 4-2 thrashing at the hands of fierce rivals Liverpool.

United, on the other hand, has become unbeatable on the track, with a record of 11 victories and seventies after 18 games.

They have come dangerously close to lose, with their record appearing particularly bleak when they were two goals down to Southampton in November.

Still, as has been the case so much this season, United came racing back. They have also trailed Brighton, Newcastle, Everton, West Ham, Sheffield United, Fulham, West Bromwich Albion, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa.

In reality, champions Manchester City have only lost once abroad, to Tottenham in November.

So the trophy is gone, but Solskjaer and his team could also go down in history on the final day of the 2020-21 season
