Manchester United seem to have picked Tom Heaton as a backup over Sam Johnstone.

According to the Telegraph, United are 'near' to recruiting Heaton as a free agent this summer.

DON"T MISS:

Heaton, 35, will double as a replacement for Dean Henderson.

A change like this will enable United to sell or loan out David de Gea, who has slipped to the second option.

United have been linked with a move for another goalie, with ESPN reporting that they are interested in Sam Johnstone.

West Brom demanded about £18 million, and although United had a sell-on option and may have negotiated a lower price, the club is saving money.

DON"T MISS:

It is much more realistic to quickly complete a transaction rather than spending time seeking payments for a backup player in the face of rivalry from other clubs. Johnstone, too, would like to be the first pick.

Heaton has been Emiliano Martinez's backup at Aston Villa this season.

United are expected to part ways with backup goalkeepers Lee Grant, 38, Sergio Romero, and Joel Pereira. All three will be made available.

According to the Telegraph, Jose Mourinho is involved in taking Romero to Roma.

De Gea may even resign because it makes little sense to retain him on such a big salary.

Heaton started his career at United but did not play a first-team game until being released in 2010 after six loan spells.

With an impressive effort in goal for Burnley in 2016, he notably disappointed a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-led United.

Heaton has earned three England caps throughout his career.
