Manchester United has once again urged social media platforms to do more to protect players from racist abuse following the Europa League final after Marcus Rashford and other players were targeted.
Rashford took to Twitter after United's loss in Poland to say he had received 'at least' 70 racist messages in the hours following the game. United later tweeted that the vile abuse had been directed at other players as well.
"Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the online hate and abuse aimed at Marcus Rashford and other players on social media following last night's game," the club said in a statement.
"There is simply no excuse for it, and we condemn it unequivocally."
"We have zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination at Manchester United, and we encourage people to report it at manutd.com/seered."
"We also urge social media platforms and regulatory authorities to strengthen anti-disgusting behaviour prevention measures."
Rashford claimed he was subjected to a "mountain" of abuse, writing on Twitter, "At least 70 racial slurs on my social accounts counted so far." Good luck to those attempting to make me feel any worse than I already do."
In a subsequent tweet, he revealed that one of his alleged abusers was a teacher.
"I'm even more outraged that one of the abusers who left a mountain of monkey emojis in my DM is a math teacher with an open profile," he wrote. "He educates children!!" And he is well aware that he can freely use racial slurs without fear of repercussions."
Rashford then shared a tweet from an anonymous user who said, "You deserve it man, you are awful."
