Man Utd's no 1 star 'set' to be cut from England Euro 2020 squad

Man Utd's no 1 star 'set' to be cut from England Euro 2020 squad

Manchester United is set to miss out on a place at Euro 2020, according to reports, with Gareth Southgate set to announce his final 26-man squad on Tuesday.

According to reports, Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood will be cut from Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2020 when the Three Lions coach reduces his 33-man group to 26 on Tuesday.

DON'T MISS:

Southgate chose to name a provisional squad last week due to the fact that several English players are still playing until the end of May. Seven potential Southgate squad members appeared in Saturday's Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Blues started Mason Mount, Ben Chilwell, and Reece James in their 1-0 victory, which was sealed when Kai Havertz collected Mount's pass to score.

Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden, and Raheem Sterling all went down.

Southgate will be relieved to see all seven players emerge physically unscathed, but will be hoping that the City quartet will be unaffected by their defeat heading into the Euros.

However, the 50-year-old has been concerned about the fitness of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Both of their seasons were cut short. Henderson, who is usually regarded as England's vice-captain, has not played since a 2-0 Merseyside derby loss to Everton in February.

DON'T MISS:

The 30-year-old was an unused substitute in Liverpool's 3-2 win over Crystal Palace on the final day, which secured third place and Champions League qualification.

Maguire hobbled off the field during United's 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on May 9.

The Red Devils' manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, named the 28-year-old on the bench for their Europa League final loss to Villarreal, but the defender was unable to play.

Greenwood, a 19-year-old striker, scored in the win over Villa earlier this month and had a strong finish to the season after a difficult start.

According to Planet Sport, he is expected to be one of the seven names cut from Southgate's squad on Tuesday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool, despite his resurgent form with the Reds, could also be left out.

Greenwood made his England debut in September against Iceland but was later sent home for violating strict coronavirus bubble rules. He and Foden were both told to leave Reykjavik and return to England.

Southgate has since reintroduced Foden, who scored his first international goals against the same opponents in November.

Greenwood, however, was included in Southgate's 33-man squad announcement last Tuesday for the first time since the incident.

It was a reward for a strong finish to the season with United.

He scored eight goals in his team's final 14 games as they finished runners-up to rivals Manchester City.

Greenwood has 29 goals in 105 Red Devils appearances since making his debut in March 2019.
