After last weekend's 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, several Manchester United fans must have convinced themselves that three strong acquisitions would put them in a good place to challenge Manchester City next season.
After a second-string XI was defeated by Leicester City on Tuesday and the cream of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's crop was defeated 4-2 by Liverpool on Thursday, they could be looking for five or six fresh arrivals.
DON'T MISS:
Following United's sixth home league loss of the season on Thursday, former captain Roy Keane informed Sky Sports that if Scott McTominay and Fred were both playing in midfield, United will never be able to seriously fight for titles.
Keane admires all of McTominay's strengths, but he is correct in stating that United's midfield needs to be significantly strengthened.
Anyone who witnessed the two latest home losses would argue that the defence is in desperate need of some new blood. Holding Edinson Cavani for another season would lighten the burden on Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford upfront, but an additional attacking challenge is still needed.
It should come as no surprise, then, that United is making early moves to complete their summer transfer company. One signing is almost complete, two more are in the works, and a fourth is being considered, which will be a welcome addition to many fans.
DON'T MISS:
Starting with the man nearest to the finish line, Tom Heaton, who will follow from Aston Villa in the coming weeks. The 35-year-old, who has three England caps, will be the team's seasoned goalie as Lee Grant and Sergio Romero retire.
Raphael Varane is next on the list, with several sources reporting that United are in preliminary negotiations with his agents and are ready to spend £40 million for the centre-back. Varane, who won the World Cup with Paul Pogba in 2018, has a year remaining on his Real Madrid deal, and United are hoping the Spaniards would opt to let him go.
United supporters will be hoping that the club either signs Jadon Sancho or moves on until the end of the season.
Few people have the patience for another long-winded saga. While scoring 16 goals and assisting 13 times for Borussia Dortmund this season, the 21-year-old has not had it all his own way in a squad that is currently fourth in the Bundesliga.
Whereas Dortmund wanted more than £90 million for the England international last summer, United seems to be optimistic that they can have him for £70 million.
Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma may be the last item of the summer puzzle. Arsenal and Liverpool have both been associated with the 24-year-old, but Ian Wright believes Manchester United is the perfect fit.
"Bissouma has made it known that he needs to quit," Wright said on Ringer FC's Wright's House. "Bissouma at United... that works. He's really nice... if you look at United and what they're about to do, it's a far more appealing prospect right now, much more."
The club could even reconsider the Kieran Trippier contract that was on the verge of being completed in January in order to include a decent right-back challenge for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
There will undoubtedly be Harry Kane and Erling Braut-Haaland speculation this summer, however bringing in Sancho, Varane, and probably Bissouma could be the club's top targets.
