Verbally agreed: Experienced star accepts free transfer to Manchester United

Aston Villa goalie Tom Heaton has formally decided to rejoin Manchester United on a free transfer this season, according to Football Insider.

According to Football Insider, the 35-year-old has turned down a new deal from Villa, though United is in negotiations to employ him as a player coach.

DON'T MISS:

With Sergio Romero's deal expiring this summer and possibly Lee Grant as well, the Red Devils seem to be looking for a new third-choice goalie.

According to Football Insider, the ‘framework' of the Heaton contract is already in motion, courtesy of a United source.

This would undoubtedly be an emotional time for Heaton and his family; the dependable stopper rose through the ranks at United before leaving in the summer of 2010 to pursue daily first-team action elsewhere.

Heaton has evolved into one of the Premier League's best goalkeepers in the 11 years following, with his peak occurring during his tenure at Burnley prior to the arrival of Nick Pope.

DON'T MISS:

According to Football Insider, Heaton would also be given a more valuable contract than the one he was granted by the Villains.

Heaton moved to the West Midlands from Burnley in the summer of 2019 but has only made 20 starts in all competitions since sustaining a critical knee injury in his first season.

The England international would undoubtedly have a genuine rivalry for Dean Henderson and David de Gea, while Heaton's presence will ensure that they meet their homegrown quotas for their Champions League and Premier League squads.
