Most of us have taken the Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United rumours with a grain of salt thus far, but a new report from Spanish outlet AS has everyone sitting up and taking notice.
According to various reports, the world's greatest footballer is still prolific at the age of 36 and is unhappy at Juventus.
And, with one year left on his contract, there's a good chance he'll decide to leave now rather than wait another year in Turin.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United are ready to cross paths 12 years later,' according to AS.
‘The English club has already expressed an interest in signing the Portuguese star, and he is looking forward to returning to Old Trafford.
‘Never before has Cristiano seriously considered returning to the club he left in 2009 to join Real Madrid.
‘Solskjaer has already spoken with him about the project and the importance of his return to Old Trafford for the club.
‘In this way, Red Devils fans would be able to realize their dream of seeing the "prodigal son" return home.'
The 36-year-old, who earns around £520,000 per week at Juventus in Italy, is said to be almost certain to leave the club if Juve fails to qualify for the Champions League, which will be decided tomorrow evening.
Juventus, for their part, maybe more than willing to let the Portuguese legend go due to the strain his salary is putting on the club's finances.
‘Without the Champions League, Juve would gladly accept the operation, though they would demand €25 million [£21 million] or try to arrange some bartering with United,' said a source close to the club. AS provides information.
‘If the Turin club qualifies for the [Champions League], the Portuguese have the option of continuing in the Vecchia Signora. Otherwise, the star's chances of remaining in Italy are nil.
‘In either case, seeing Cristiano at Manchester United next season appears to be the most realistic option right now.'
The problem for Ronaldo is his age and the length of his contract. When he is 37, it will be much more difficult for him to get a good salary, whereas now he is still a force, and a club may be willing to offer him a two or even three-year deal at a good rate to see out the rest of his career at the top.
‘If Juventus do not offer guarantees, Cristiano sees the Red Devils as a nice way to begin closing the circle on his legendary career,' the outlet adds.
‘Cristiano... will agree to lower his salary so that it does not cause a problem.
‘In the Premier League, he could spend a couple of seasons as a protagonist in a club that wants to win everything, while also providing a good environment for his family and children.
‘As a conclusion, Cristiano's plan is to hang up his boots where he began, at Sporting de Portugal.'
