Gary Neville predicts that Jadon Sancho may be Manchester United's only attacking signing this summer, although three forward-thinking players might be able to leave.
Last summer, Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho was United's highest target, but Neville believes the 12-month wait could be worth it as United looks to negotiate a lower price.
DON"T MISS:
The former Manchester United defender is sceptical that Harry Kane or Erling Haaland would accompany Sancho through the doors at Old Trafford, but he believes some attackers will be able to say their goodbyes.
Neville believes Juan Mata's time is up, but Dan James may be offered for the right amount.
And, considering his excellent form while on loan at West Ham, he isn't sure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would recall Jesse Lingard.
‘If you look at Manchester United's strategy over the last couple of years under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, I don't believe they would sign another striker,' Neville told Sky Sports. ‘I don't have the internal connections I used to have, but that's my guess because they've been desperate for Sancho.
DON"T MISS:
‘Take a glance at Manchester United's recruiting last summer; they were chastised for failing to sign Sancho. But it might be very wise if they can have him this year for half the price after waiting a year.
Juan Mata, who has done a good job with the club, is likely to resign. I believe that if they can find a decent price for Daniel James, he would be able to move anywhere else. ‘
There is a feeling that Jesse Lingard – he's done very good at West Ham – would leave, but I believe Ole will tell no, go somewhere, and we'll get money for Jesse Lingard.' Although Donny van de Beek hasn't seen much action this season, Neville believes the Dutch international will stay, joining Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, and Sancho as attacking choices.
‘I guess Van de Beek needs to stay. In my mind, he simply must,' he said. ‘Then there are Rashford, Fernandes, Greenwood, Pogba, Martial, and Van de Beek, and Cavani at the end.' Can Cavani play if Manchester United sign a Harry Kane and a Sancho, for example? Can Greenwood make an appearance? Can he mature into the player that Manchester United desires? Then, where does that leave Rashford?' Where does Pogba fit if you intend to play two defensive midfielders like Ole does with Fernandes upfront? Fernandes is a given.
I'm looking at it now and thinking: I hope Sancho moves in, and I think you've got Sancho on the right hand. On that line, you have Greenwood as a substitute. Cavani and Greenwood are in front, and they'll like Greenwood to come through because I think he's outstanding.
On the west, you have Rashford and Martial, and Pogba will theoretically fit in there if he isn't in midfield. If you sign Kane or Haaland on top of that, I don't believe it fits for Manchester United in the way they've hired in recent years.
Allowing new talent to emerge, such as Greenwood, and ensuring Rashford plays... Van de Beek can't get a game, I think it's Sancho, and I think that's the end of their market.'
