Edinson Cavani has decided to extend his contract with Manchester United for another year, providing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a significant boost as he prepares for next season.
The Uruguay international, 34, is at the end of his first season in English football, in which he has reached optimum goalscoring form at just the right moment.
However, although recent weeks seemed to have strengthened Cavani's chances of staying at Old Trafford for a second season, it remained unclear if he will commit to another campaign.
The club announced yesterday that a one-year extension of Cavani's deal has been activated and settled upon by all sides, guaranteeing that he will stay in the Premier League for the 2021-'22 season.
The news is a welcome boost for Solskjaer after a tumultuous time of fixture congestion and fan discontent.
Cavani has been crucial to the club's good finish to the season, especially in the Europa League, where he was excellent in the 8-5 semi-final aggregate win over Roma.
Cavani scored twice in the second leg after being involved in five of the six first-leg scores, setting up a final against Villarreal on May 26 in Gdansk, where he is likely to start as the lone attacker in what has been Solskjaer's preferred formation.
However, earlier this year, it seemed that Cavani's future at United, which he entered as a free agent after being released by Paris St Germain, was far from definite.
Cavani did not play much football until the middle of March 2020, when he joined United and the forward needed time to regain match fitness after fighting Covid-19 over the summer.
Cavani's one-year deal had an optional additional year, which had to be settled upon by all sides, and although Solskjaer still appeared eager to re-sign the veteran, his return had been in question until he had shown his health.
