Boca Juniors are assured of signing Edinson Cavani as his deal with Manchester United expires next year.
The Argentine club was hoping to sign Cavani this summer if he were to abandon Old Trafford and would be surprised to see him commit to another year.
The club, though, has not given up on their pursuit, and Juan Román Riquelme, Boca's sporting director, is still in talks with the forward.
"I keep talking to him; I hope he'll be with us next year, Heaven willing; I've been talking to him for over a year," he told TNT Sports.
"I wasn't sure he'd stay in England, but in December he informed me he always wanted to come, and it would be great to have him."
Riquelme's words demonstrate how the condition with Cavani has improved in recent months, with his position in the squad dramatically improving.
Cavani originally struggled to find his footing in the Premier League and in English football, which was understandable given that he saw little football in his final months with Paris Saint-Germain.
In recent months, the seasoned forward has shone, scoring a brace in both legs of United's Europa League semi-final win over Roma.
Cavani has recorded 15 goals and provided six assists in 37 appearances for United across all competitions.
