Manchester United paid £35 million to sign Donny van de Beek from Ajax during the summer transfer window.

The Dutch midfielder was supposed to slot right into the Red Devils midfield, but things haven't gone as planned for him.

DON'T MISS:

Van de Beek appeared in United's pre-season friendly loss to Aston Villa and inspired new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his debut.

Rio Ferdinand expressed fear at the time that Paul Pogba, who was out with an injury, would be forced to play in an unfamiliar role to satisfy the new signing when he returned to the fray.

"Well, I guess that's a big concern," Ferdinand said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Listen, if you're going to play the best players in that midfield and you're going to play three, you'd say Paul Pogba in the holding position and [Bruno] Fernandes and Van de Beek playing around that, a little more open and willing to pass around and build."

DON'T MISS:

Is that the right role for Paul Pogba? No, I would disagree. However, you must consider what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wishes to do. Would he want his best talent on the field, or is he referring to players who can work into a system?

That, I believe, is the most intriguing aspect of Man United's signing, the player, for me heading into the season.

Is he only going to be called one of the team's best players and participate, or are we going to suggest we want the scheme for the players to work into?

"It's a huge decision, and it remains to be seen, but I do believe Manchester United will see some changes and acquisitions in this squad heading into the season."

Though Van de Beek has struggled to find game time in his first season at United, Pogba has relished the battle for a midfield spot and stepped up.

He has enjoyed his best season in a Red Devils shirt and is one of the first names on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team sheet these days when he's available.
