According to news in Spain, Manchester United has won the race to sign Villarreal center-back Pau Torres and hopes to close a contract before the start of the European Championship this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be prioritizing a potential defensive partner for Harry Maguire this summer, and United has a shortlist of contenders that includes Sevilla's Jules Kounde and Real Madrid's Raphael Varane.

However, according to the Spanish radio show El Larguero, United is close to signing Torres from Villarreal ahead of the upcoming transfer deadline.

According to the source, United is aiming to complete the move before Torres theoretically joins Spain's squad for their European Championship campaign, which starts on June 14 against Sweden.

It is also reported that other clubs interested in signing Torres, including Real Madrid, are ‘resigned' to missing out on the 24-year-old, considering how far United has progressed in talks.

Meanwhile, Villarreal is hoping that United can follow Torres' €50 million (£43.4 million) release clause, which will escalate to €65 million (£56.4 million) in the remaining 15 days of the summer transfer season.

Torres has been a crucial figure in Villarreal's defense this season, and the Spaniard assisted Unai Emery's side to a 2-1 win over Arsenal in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final clash on Thursday evening.

Villarreal led 2-0 in the first 30 minutes, but Nicolas Pepe's penalty equalized for the Gunners. Torres said after the game, 'They escaped alive.'

‘It's obvious that we won, and it's a good result, but given the way the game went, we should have killed them.' I can't explain what happened [in the second half]. We had clear opportunities, and they found a penalty that I didn't see, but I know my feet were still there.'
