Manchester United and Manchester City have received a significant boost in their hopes of remaining in European competitions this season.

After both Manchester United and Manchester City agreed to become founding members of the European Super League, there was speculation that they might be kicked out of their respective European competitions before next week's semi-finals.
United are set to play Roma in the Europa League, with City playing PSG in the Champions League, yet comments from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin put a major question mark about whether these games would take place.

United are scheduled to play Roma in the Europa League, while City will face PSG in the Champions League, but UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin's remarks cast a large doubt about whether these games will take place.
Ceferin said UEFA was weighing its options after earlier threatening to ban teams competing in a Super League.
We're currently assessing with our legal staff, so we'll take whatever sanctions we can and notify you as soon as we can," he added.
"In my view, they should be banned from all of our tournaments and the teams from all of our competitions as soon as possible."
Indeed, UEFA executive member Jesper Moller predicted that insurgent clubs will be kicked out of European tournaments by Friday.
"The clubs must go," he said, "and I expect that to happen on Friday."
However, as previously noted, United officials say UEFA's intentions are 'illegal,' and that if the breakaway clubs are automatically disqualified, the Champions League and Europa League will be devalued.
Leading sports rights scholar Juan de Dios Crespo claims to have agreed with this position.
Crespo told Goal Espana that rather than being disqualified from an active competition, teams would most likely be barred from joining in the future.
"In the rules of the Champions League, as in the Europe League, there is an entry process with fixed requirements," Crespo said.
"They will not be disqualified, but they may also be denied admission."
"Once they are in this year, they cannot be kicked out; at most, they will be barred from entering the following year."
