During Manchester United's 6-2 win at Old Trafford, Paul Scholes blasted Fred for his role in Roma's second goal.
In the ninth minute, Bruno Fernandes finished off an outstanding pass to open the scoring for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

However, Roma was ahead by halftime after Lorenzo Pellegrini equalized from the penalty spot and Edin Dzeko converted from near range.
United turned up their efforts in the second half, and a brace from Edinson Cavani, along with another Fernandes shot and a late goal from Mason Greenwood, gave Solskjaer's side a commanding lead.
Scholes, on the other hand, was enraged by Fred's defensive contribution in the first minute. When asked about Roma's second goal, Scholes told BT Sport, "That's what Fred is in the team for, he's in the team to avoid this sort of stuff."
‘He gets in behind them [United's defense] from their strongest midfielder. Please, Fred, put a stop to that.' He contributes little going forward, and his sole responsibility is to put a stop to this sort of behavior. And he's been left lacking once more.'

Meanwhile, Solskjaer slammed Scholes and fellow BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves for suggesting that United should change staff at halftime. ‘It's quick up there to dream of who should play... but who shouldn't?' Solskjaer said.
That is a really good squad, and it performed admirably against Tottenham. Mason Greenwood should be sad that he will not be playing, but it is all about balance.
Perhaps those two should try to leave players off their teams and choose a team with balance.' We know we have creative players who can make huge moments happen.
Today, Paul Pogba's position was very successful in that position, and he was given some freedom. He has a strong basis to stand on. The difference today is that we took the majority of our chances. The character demonstrated that they returned and did not lose their heads.
We didn't look fantastic for maybe five to ten minutes at the end of the first period, but we pulled ourselves together.
The two goals are junior, schoolboy errors that shouldn’t happen at this level.’
