Man Utd's likely line-up for Newcastle with Cristiano Ronaldo in starting XI

Man Utd's likely line-up for Newcastle with Cristiano Ronaldo in starting XI

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's Manchester United welcome Steve Bruce's Newcastle to Old Trafford for a Premier League battle that will be dominated by one player - Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester United's Premier League match against Newcastle at Old Trafford has been overshadowed by the astonishing return of five-time Ballon D'or winner Cristiano Ronaldo twelve years after he initially departed Old Trafford.

The Portugal international has been working with his new teammates for the first time since completing his comeback from Juventus after three years in Turin.

Man United has had a fantastic start to the season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, now lying third after three games, with two victories and a draw, as the Red Devils attempt to build a serious title challenge.

United haven't won any silverware in four years, with the exception of the 2017 Europa League, and their quest for a 21st league title has lasted eight years, with the last coming in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge in 2013.

United, on the other hand, has spent heavily this summer on a handful of the continent's most highly regarded players, all three of whom are set to start against the Magpies.

David de Gea's place in goal is all but assured as Dean Henderson remains sidelined after contracting Covid-19 in July, with De Gea appearing in all three of United's league games this season.

After summer signing Raphael Varane played one game in United colors before the international break away at Wolves, it is expected that Solskjaer will field his first-choice back four.

On his debut, the former Real Madrid stalwart had the United fans salivating, keeping a clean sheet and looking every inch the four-time Champions League winner as he dominated proceedings from the back.

Varane will play alongside club captain Harry Maguire, with full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw flanking them, with the latter set to make his customary marauding runs forward.

Given that Fred is unavailable, a midfield trio of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, and Bruno Fernandes seems the most likely. FIFA chose to ban many Brazilian Premier League players after they failed to report for international duty.

United will field one of the Premier League's most potent attacking trios, with teenage wonder Mason Greenwood expected to start on the left side and £73 million former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jadon Sancho on the other wing for his maiden start at Old Trafford.

That leaves Ronaldo in the center, where the Portuguese star will likely be looking to score on his second United debut.

When asked where he thinks Ronaldo's best position after the purchase was completed, Solskjaer stated that he is "more of a central striker for me at the moment, I want him in the box, scoring goals."

Man United are expected to field the following lineup against Newcastle on Saturday, September 11, at 3 p.m. at Old Trafford: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; Matic, Pogba, Fernandes; Sancho, Greenwood; Ronaldo (4-3-3)
